The Leica Monovid 8×25 is a compact 8x monocular with a 25mm objective, positioned as a lightweight alternative to binoculars for travel and everyday observation. It pairs a 120m field of view with 90% light transmission for a clear, stable image, while the supplied close-up lens extends focus to 25–30cm for detailed viewing. Field of view and subject acquisition
A field of view of 120m at 1,000m gives enough width to scan across a scene without repeated repositioning. This makes it easier to locate and follow subjects when observing architecture, landscapes, or events. The 6.9° angle of view supports this further, giving a natural framing that does not feel restricted. Combined with the 8x magnification, it keeps a balance between overall coverage and usable detail.
Optical system and image clarity
The optical system uses a roof prism design with P40 phase correction, combined with Leica’s HighLux-System (HLS) and HDC multilayer coatings. These maintain light transmission around 90%%, supporting a bright, well-defined image in daylight and mixed lighting. Contrast remains consistent across the frame, helping maintain separation in fine detail, while colour reproduction stays neutral. This avoids the over-saturation that can make extended viewing less accurate.
Close focus and detailed viewing
The standard close focus distance is approximately 2 metres, covering general observation without additional adjustment. When the supplied close-up lens is attached, this reduces to 25–30cm. This extends the Monovid beyond distance viewing, allowing detailed inspection of small subjects such as text, textures, or fine structures. It adds a second use without increasing the system’s size.
Viewing control and adjustment
Focusing is handled internally via a central focus ring, maintaining smooth adjustment across the full range. The system remains consistent across distances. The eyepiece provides 15mm of eye relief and includes a rotary eyecup with two fixed positions. Combined with ±4 dpt diopter adjustment, this allows the image to be set accurately for different users, including those wearing glasses.
Build, finish and sealing
The Monovid uses an aluminium housing to maintain rigidity while keeping the weight to 152g, making it noticeably lighter than compact binoculars and easy to carry in a pocket or small bag. The exterior is finished with Leica’s diamond-pattern leather, consistent with their premium camera design. Internally, the sealed construction and nitrogen filling prevent dust, moisture, and fogging, with a water resistance rating of 5 metres.
